Function or gimmick? (1)

Like most phones out there now, the camera system on the Leitz phone 3 has a number of what might be called "functions" which can be used to control various aspects of the picture. One of them is something that's been around for a pretty long time now and which might be called "artificial depth of field control". It's something you have to use sparingly, otherwise it gets boring (hence the reference to "gimmick"), but when it works it's quite interesting. Plus, with the Leitz phone, this effect is part of the three "lens simulations" which are part of the camera.

Anyway, I've been shooting with this and slowly getting to know what kind of pictures can make it work (i.e. where there aren't any really obvious problems at a glance) and what kind of pictures result in a dead giveaway that it's created by software. This article is, obviously, made up of the former type. Hope you like them!

More to come, possibly with more on these functions.

Thanks for looking!
