Whatever there is (1)

My wife is an excellent cook, which is especially useful given that I'm anything but an excellent cook. Why would I mention that on a photography-related blog? Well, she sometimes describes what she's cooking with a Japanese phrase which means something like "whatever happens to be around", i.e. instead of going shopping, we're going to use what we already have at home.

Now, I'm as bad as any other photographer when it comes to new gear, but as I already have two lenses - two Canon FD manual focus lenses, which were given to me many years ago and which I will never part with - I thought I should spend some time putting this idea into practice. I didn't have a camera which could use them, so I cheated slightly, but I went on the cheap and got an old Micro 4/3 body with an adaptor for a very small amount of money. Then, because FD lenses are now several generations back in technological terms, they are ridiculously cheap, so just for fun I picked up another one: a 500mm mirror lens with a fixed F8 aperture. On a Micro 4/3 that works out, in 35mm terms, as 1000mm, which makes for some pretty interesting perspectives (and sore arm muscles).

So the next few entries will be from this budget-price setup. Hope you enjoy them!
