Enforced style

I was going through my usual editing / post-processing when I noticed that I had an entire set of photos which had one point in common: the nature of the light more or less forced me to convert them to black and white.

One thing that photographers sometimes worry about is whether any given image should be kept in colour or converted (unless you're shooting black and white film or one of the few cameras out there which are designed to shoot black and white only). The traditional advice seems to be "if light (as opposed to colour, content, etc.) is the dominant element of the picture, then it is at least worth trying out a b/w conversion". With these, it was clear as the light of day, pun somewhat intended, that presenting them in colour would be doing them a huge disservice.

Hence this week's post: nothing but blacks, whites, and greys. Hope you enjoy them. A significant number were shot in the general area of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku.

There may be an interim post or two, but soon we'll be getting to the autumnal colours in Japan, which of course are the opposite of this post in that they are absolutely to be displayed in colour.

Thanks for looking!
