Hokkaido 2012 Part 2

April 02, 2012  •  1 Comment

Day 2 in Sapporo involved a lot of going up things, by foot and various other means of transport. The first stop was the ski jump at Okurayama. The last time I went on a ski lift, I was snowboarding for the first time. Upon disembarking from the lift, I lost my balance, fell onto my knees and the ski lift hit me on the back of the head. Fortunately, we weren't at Okurayama for skiing, but for its excellent views over Sapporo.

There was still a lot of snow about :

On the way back from the ski jump, we made a brief visit to Sapporo's "Jingu" shrine. As a shrine, it was pretty similar to a lot of others which I've visited, but I did come away with one nice light/dark shot:

From here we went to see Maruyama Zoo. I'd heard terrible things about Japanese zoos, but while this place was in no way what you'd call an animal's paradise, neither was it anything like the house of horror you'd heard about.

Eagle (shot through cage, hence the blurry bars etc)

Not sure exactly what to call this next one; the sign at the zoo was "トド" which Wikipedia defines in English as "Steller sea lion", but I've also heard it referred to as "sea cow". Whatever it is, it's kind of cool.

Our next stop was Mt. Moiwa, another place with renowned views over the area. This place uses a ropeway followed by a cable car to get up to the top.

From the very very top, it's actually not that great because you're so far up that everything looks like Lego and nothing stands out. The most interesting shot I got was shooting through a wire mesh, through a tree, at the background while waiting to come down in the cable car:

Last stop for the day was another place with good night views, the JR Tower.

Last but not least, night view 4. The bright white thing at the back is the ski jump at Okurayama.

That brought day 2 to a close. More to come...
