Adventures beyond : the ultrawide

I've always considered myself more or less a "telephoto shooter". However, these definitions can be restrictive, and can stop us from trying out other things. So I took a step in the opposite direction. After a recent gear reshuffle, I kept my Olympus OMD-EM5 with the two manual focus Canon lenses (which cover the telephoto range), and added to this collection a new piece of kit : the Sigma DP Quattro 0. I've always been partial to Sigmas; while they have a lot of tradeoffs, the image quality you get at the lower ISOs is simply sensational.

The Quattro 0, in 35mm equivalent terms, is a 21mm lens (14mm on APS-C). I originally thought that as I have the iPhone 7 - which has approximately a 28mm lens - that I wouldn't really need a 21. However, a little online research pointed out that as focal lengths get wider, the difference between two focal lengths gets more dramatic. In other words, the difference between 293mm and 300mm is practically nothing, the difference between 57 and 50 is maybe a little noticeable, but the difference between 28 and 21 is very clear.

I've only just started using it, but a few things are already evident : 21 is definitely a lot wider than 28, you need to get VERY close to your subject at times, and (the real biggie) you absolutely have to keep the camera straight on both horizontal and vertical axes. The electronic level feature is an absolute necessity here.

Anyway, here are a dozen of the earliest pictures. Hope you enjoy them

The Olympus and Sigma are both coming with me on an upcoming trip abroad, so the coming weeks should see a variety of pictures from that as well.

Thanks for looking!
