There's a saying, which I just made up: "If you're going to go to see a park famous for its roses, don't go on a public holiday unless you want to spend half an hour or more sitting still in traffic".
On top of that, when we eventually got to the place in question, the light was sadistically awful: almost directly overhead, and incredibly harsh. Not being one to waste a photographic challenge, I made quite a bit of use of the X Vario's close-up mode (I hesitate to call it "macro", but it serves a similar purpose) and then pushed the highlight and shadow recovery tools in Lightroom about as far as they could go. Result: pictures which aren't amazing, but serviceable. You work with what you have! Anyway, hope you like these.
