Enoura observatory
Enoura observatory is located in Odawara, Kanagawa (one of Tokyo's neighbouring prefectures). It is the brainchild of Hiroshi Sugimoto, a photographer and architect who is known, among other things, for his seascape photographs (some of which are on display at the observatory). Like many things in Japan, you have to go somewhat out of your way to get there, but it's worth it. The light wasn't ideal - harsh, with strong shadows, which necessitated a fair bit of work with the RAW files - but you work with the light you get.
