iPhone irony

February 14, 2021  •  Leave a Comment

The more I shoot with the iPhone exclusively, the more I realise that - for the type of pictures I take these days - there's not a lot it can't do. However, we run into a chicken/egg question: am I shooting this way because I only have the iPhone, or have I pared everything down to the iPhone because I shoot this way? (Answer: I don't know). The irony referred to in the title is that the more I use the iPhone, the more I want to get back to using a dedicated camera.

There are things which I can't do easily / at all with the iPhone: in particular, shoot telephoto (which I don't do much these days) and have complete control over aperture / ISO / shutter speed. The former is possible with digital zoom, which generally looks terrible. The latter is theoretically possible with a third party app, but it's still not really the same to me. And while I'm definitely impressed with what the iPhone outputs, the experience of using it rarely rises above "functional"; I've used cameras in the past which are simply incredibly satisfying to shoot.

Anyway, while I mull idly over this, here's a selection of fairly recent offerings from the iPhone. Hope you enjoy them.

Think I'll take a break next week, but there's no shortage of stuff to come.

Thanks for looking!
