Pardon my French

October 03, 2021  •  Leave a Comment

While I've lived in Japan for a pretty long time now, and Japanese is the language I use most on a daily basis, my major subject at university was actually French. Now I'm pretty sure my French is extremely rusty from lack of use, but there are words in the language which I particularly like. Two such words are "quotidien" ("daily" or "day-to-day") and "hebdomadaire" ("weekly"). There's something about the sound of those words I like, and they also describe my photographic tendencies, as I tend to take pictures every day and (try to) come up with a blog post more or less every week.

The other connection with France and French comes from a quote from one of the photographic greats, Robert Doisneau (or at least a quote attributed to him; you know what the internet is like): "The marvels of daily life are exciting". In other words, while it's always fun to go somewhere new, camera in hand, you should also be able to capture photographs in your daily milieu (oops, did it again).

Anyway, all that means is that this collection features pictures which I came across during the process of day-to-day living, instead of pictures I "looked for". Hope you like them!
