Tokyo and Düsseldorf, day 1

I never need an excuse to go to Tokyo, but give me a good enough reason and I'm there. This time it was the chance to see Kraftwerk doing their 3-D concert thing. Not going to miss that. I saw them once before, years back in the UK, but they're not the most frequent tourers, so if you get the chance to see them, you take it.

This gave me three days in Tokyo, which equates to a lot of photos. I had the X100s and my old Canon film camera. Needless to say I was much more conservative with the film camera than the Fuji: I probably shot five or six hundred shots in all on the X100s and about fifteen on the Canon. It was loaded with 400 ISO Tri-X, and once I've finished the roll I'll look into ways of getting the shots on here if they're good enough. I have to say that I'm getting more and more drawn to shooting with film than with digital, although I don't think I'm ready to chuck the digital away just yet.

Enough exposition, though, and more pixels from the first day.

We were staying in Akasaka, a place with which I'm not that familiar. Upon taking a random walk from the hotel, I discovered a park with many foreigners (apparently, it's an area with several embassies, which might explain it). There was a small basketball court there...

Just across from the park was a big green lawn area. It was a Sunday and the weather was exceptionally nice, so there were a whole lot of people there...

Just opposite this place was Tokyo Midtown, a huge shopping center with an outdoor "al fresco" seating area.

Once you get into and beyond Midtown itself, you're into big-tall-building territory. A lot of fun to shoot.

Exit Midtown and you're approaching the entrance to Roppongi. There was this nice little statue on the way.

And this monstrous building with a neat shadow cutting it diagonally in half

Roppongi Hills is an office area and shopping center with a strange spider-thing sculpture. I happened to see a couple of ladies taking a dance class.

It's one of the most obvious shots you can take from Roppongi, but it's still nice to shoot...

After Roppongi, I headed over to Shinjuku. Shooting from Tocho (the government tower) is nothing new, but I figured I may as well. Lucky timing: as I got to the observation area, the sun was sinking over the city. I had time for about three shots before it was gone.

I stayed around the Shinjuku area to shoot some night shots; the X100s is pretty impressive in low light. I set it to bracket different colour styles (Fuji call them "film simulations"): colour, and black and white with and without filter effects. Mostly, the black and white looked nicer at night.

I wasn't the only one out with a camera...

Lastly, one colour shot...

That's the end of day 1. Day 2 will follow soon.

Thanks for looking!
