48 hours in Tokyo, part 1: the urban side

July 12, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

When my wife asked if I would like to come along to Tokyo for a couple of days while she visited friends, it took me about a nanosecond to say yes. As I have mentioned before on this blog, I love Tokyo, not just for its practically limitless photographic opportunities, but for the sheer size and energy of the place. This was a literal overnight visit - up on one day and back the next - but we still managed to fit in a fair bit of sightseeing and walking around, and I got enough pictures for a two parter.

The first one is (as the name suggests) focused on the urban side of Tokyo, and the following one will be a lot greener.

So here we go.

Arrival at Tokyo Station

Nice light

Did I mention that the light was nice?

After visiting my wife's friends, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel and I took a quick walk around the area. Met this lady, with her friendly dog who gave me a good sniff, and as I went to take its picture as they walked away, she turned back and noticed.

I like trying to find interesting compositions where you wouldn't expect to find them, like on a wall.

Going up to the viewing area of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a kind of ritual for me whenever I'm in Tokyo. This time I got lucky with the scenery - the sun was just going down.

Trying to get hold of a taxi...

This one was inside the hotel: the bags (I'm guessing for laundry) were stacked up against the window, and there was strong sunlight coming through, but it was just illuminating the very top part of the bags.

Tsukiji market and surrounding area

Lastly, from the Tokyo Station area

and an overview of the station itself

As I said, the next post will be a lot greener and will mainly be from the time spent in Hamarikyu garden, near Tsukiji.

Thanks for looking!
