Shooting with the iPhone 6 plus

I recently upgraded my "garake", as the Japanese call the old style of mobile phones (it derives from "Galapagos", and apparently has to do with how these phones "evolved" because they were designed only to work in Japan, or something like that...but I digress). The two phones I was looking at were a Samsung and the iPhone 6 plus. The Samsung, I was led to believe, wouldn't play nicely with my mac, so the iPhone was left as the winner.

I'd heard some quite good things about the camera on the 6 plus, and I was certainly curious to shoot with it. It's said to be more or less a 28mm equivalent, and I have had experience with that in the past. Of course it has digital zoom as well, but that tends to look a bit...substandard. So I decided that unless you count the square mode, I was going to shoot it at its native focal length at all times.

Bottom line is, I'm pleasantly surprised. The camera on my last phone was a joke (well, I did acquire the phone some 7 years ago, in its defence), so it's not as if I have many other phone cameras to compare it to, but so far it's exceeded my expectations somewhat.

So as a little change from the "real" cameras, here are some initial shots from the iPhone 6 plus. Most have had only minor changes (exposure, dodge and burn) applied in Aperture. Enjoy!

Yes, that's Tokyo Station. I was there on a literal overnight visit, a visit which produced enough photos for at least two entries (which will be forthcoming)

I imagine I'll be posting more iPhone shots over time (I apply the same standards as any other camera: I only put it up if I would show it to someone else).

More to come from the various cameras I now find myself owning...

Thanks for looking!
