Photography as an ordinary activity

A rather strange title, which needs a short explanation. I am a huge admirer of Jay Maisel, and one of the things he points out is that if you always have a camera with you, then you don't have to make a conscious choice about going out to shoot. In the past I would say to myself "OK, now it's time to go take photos", grab my camera and go out looking for things to photograph.

Slowly, this idea has been replaced with "photography is something I do at all times", so it becomes something like walking. It's not something you consciously do any more; it becomes a more integral part of you.

Hope that doesn't sound too pretentious, anyway! The point being that the shots in this entry were all taken while just walking around (or standing around), not actively seeking out a photo as such.

Hope you like them. The majority are DP3 Merrill with a few from the RX100.

"Drat"

This is a meerkat. It was being walked in the park by its owner. It is not often that you see a meerkat being walked in a park. Not getting a shot of it was out of the question.

Coming down the bridge

Black and white, quite literally

The light was pretty poor, so this one took needed a black and white conversion and some post processing work to become presentable.

I don't know if I'm starting to shoot "subconsciously", but when I took this one I didn't see the woman on the far side of the crossing who is standing in exactly the same way as the woman in the foreground. I only saw it afterwards.

More simplicity.

Sunset. Yeah, I know...

This fellow was practicing his ball skills, and quite considerable they were too.

Ramu-chan (if you follow this site at all, you'll have seen her before. She lives just down the road from me in a small cafe and is a wonderfully friendly dog)

This is an intentional attempt at a certain compositional principle which I picked up from Ming Thein (if you're not familiar with him, go look at his site; he is quite something). I'm not going to give the exact idea away, but he refers to it on some of his teaching videos and I would definitely recommend these if you're looking to improve your photography).

Last shot for this entry:

Should be more to come, although I've actually more or less caught up on things. Must go out and shoot this week...

Thanks for looking!
