Zoos and views

July 22, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

I found myself at Nagoya's Higashiyama botanical garden and zoo yesterday. I've been there once or twice before, and taken pictures, but not with the detail-monster that is the Merrill. While I was at it, I went up to the top of the Sky Tower to get some shots from high up (which I also did a couple of days ago from the TV tower, but at night). So as the title suggests, this is going to be a combination of views of the city and animals.

First, a few night views. The trick to getting these was to put the lens literally against the glass (to avoid reflection and to create a stable base) and to hold your breath while shooting (because at base ISO, we were looking at several seconds).

Next, some animals. The first place I found myself at housed animals of the American continent. A mix of cute little critters and big boys.

Following this, I went to the reptile house, which was pretty interesting. Again, it wasn't very bright, so I had to stabilise the camera on the glass cages (not officially allowed, but I was careful not to make any noise)

Back to some views now, from the Sky Tower looking out over Nagoya.

There are only so many variants on the green/urban split that you can take, so I went back down to the rest of the zoo.

This one's a bit abstract, but I like how it came out. It's a shot of what I think are the pipes which keep the penguin enclosure at the right temperature.

The inhabitants themselves:

The tallest animals on the planet

Now I have an excuse to use the word "ass" on here

And I'll tapir off here (ducks flying bottles)

Thanks for looking. Next major photo trip is to Hokkaido, coming up in a while. Hopefully this will mean shooting film and digital both, and uploading the results here.
