Raw Power

September 26, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Since I got the X-Pro 1 I've been shooting JPEG fine all the time, and the results are more than acceptable. But given that the camera came with a RAW converter, I figured it would be worth seeing what happens if I play around with it. It's called Silkypix, and my first impression of it was that the user interface was designed by a cat. Or a plant. Or something not human. It was so unintuitive that it was almost intuitive. But I kind of got the hang of it.

So everything in this post is a processed RAW file. Here goes.

It's the end of summer - beginning of autumn here in Japan right now, which means that the skies are extremely blue. Great for a camera like the Fuji; Fuji have always been well known for their colours.

 Lovely whites on the flowers.

There was a huuuuuuge dark/light gap here. The camera seemed to handle it very well.

This was all about keeping the colours natural while also making them striking. The drop of water was just lucky timing.

I've shot this kind of thing before - the contrast of nature and manmade. Again, quite a tricky exposure for the camera (very bright sky, dark-coloured buildings and green trees with parts in shade). Not a bad result, although I feel that the trees aren't quite right.

Unapologetic reflection shot, one of three

Unapologetic reflection shot, two of three

Unapologetic reflection shot, three of three (and the pick of the bunch for me)

Moon over Sakae. This was NOISY at first (it was shot at 5000 and in RAW). The Silkypix software turned it into what you see. I'm impressed.

This is my first time experimenting with this particular RAW conversion software, so hopefully I'll get deeper and deeper into it and produce better and better results.

Thank you for looking!
